Don’t Fret, Follow These 5 Home Maintenance Tips To Get Ready for Halloween

Halloween is approaching, and you know what that means: cold weather! The fall temperatures can take a toll on your home, so follow these 5 home maintenance tips to ensure your home withstands the chilly weather.

1. Examine Your Doors and Windows for Drafts

new windowsThe air in your home can easily escape by drafts in your windows and doors. Avoid extra costs from lost air by adding extra drapery around these areas and investing in necessary glass repair. At Glass Express, we are experts at installing insulated glass that will save you a scary amount of money in electric bills in the long run.

2. Replace Your Air Filters

Changing your home’s air and/or furnace filter will create a more efficient filter that will heat your home faster. Another tip that will help keep the warm air flowing, is changing the direction of your ceiling fans to move clockwise. That pushes the heat down.

3. Check Your Pipes

As the air outside gets colder, the water inside your pipes could begin to freeze. This could eventually lead to burst pipes. Prevent broken pipes by draining your outdoor faucets and providing extra installation to those inside your home exposed to cold weather.

4. Take a look at Your Home’s Roof and Gutters

Remove any elements found in your gutters, such as leaves, rocks and dirt. This will help melted snow flow properly during the cold months and prevent leakage into your home.

5. Get Your Fireplace Ready

There’s nothing better than sitting by a nice warm fire in the cold months. Make sure your fireplace is prepared and cleaned out before your first fire to ensure air can flow through properly. If needed, hire a chimney sweeper.

Follow these 5 simple tips to guarantee a safe and warm fall season. For inquiries on glass repairs and insulated installations, call the experts at Glass Express Repair today!

Glass Repair for the DIYers’

We would love to repair windows and all of your glass repair needs. And we are good at it. Just check our testimonials. However, we know there are several “Do It Yourself” friends who just want to give it a try. So, for all you DIYs, here is some advice to help you with your next project.

When it comes to glass replacement, there are a few steps you need to take in order to successfully pull it off. Glass repair can go smoothly as long as you know what to do. It only takes some basic tools and a few simple steps and you’ll be on your way.

The first thing you will need to do is measure the window frame in which you need to replace the glass. The piece of glass you purchase needs to be a little bit smaller than the opening of the window in order to make room for the new window glass to fit. You need to measure from one inside edge of the window frame to the other inside edge of the window frame. You will then need to subtract anywhere from 1/16 to 1/18 inch in each direction.

After that you will need to have a piece of double-strength glass cut to the exact dimensions that are necessary in order for the glass to fit in the window frame. When purchasing the glazier’s clips or points you will need enough of them to be able to install one approximately every six inches around the window pane.

The next step is to make sure the glass window is sealed into the window frame. This will involve having to take a cord of compound, rolling it and pressing it into the joint of the frame.

You will then need to take a putty knife and smooth the compound around the joint. Once you have accomplished this step, you will then need to remove any extra compound from each side of the window frame.

Once the compound is dry, paint it to match the window frame.

If you follow these steps, your glass windows should be set. Good luck with your next glass repair project.

Why You Should Consider Investing In Safety Glass

We all know mistakes happen and things break. Take the precaution of insuring your glass fixtures are less likely to break and are less harmful if broken. We offer a wide range of safety glass including; tempered glass, laminated glass, wire glass, fire rated glass and safety mirrors.

Tempered glass most often requires replacing broken glass with a new piece of glass with more strength to meet specifications as well as ensure that the glass is less likely to be broken in the future. Laminated glass has sheets of plastic or other texture on either side of the glass to avoid shattering when impacted. Repair with laminated glass involves taking out the broken glass and replacing it with a laminated pane.

Wire glass repair is more difficult due to the strands of wire within the glass panes. Its often thought that the wire makes the glass stronger, however that’s not the case. The wire is there to increase fire resistance. We also offer safety mirrors. Safety mirrors are commonly installed in places like dance studios, stores, gyms, and other places where mirrors are more likely to be broken.

There are many situations where considering purchasing safety glass may be your best option. Safety glass is a smart investment and insures a greater life span of all your glass fixtures.

Let the Sun Shine In – Your Skylight!

It’s right about this time of year that I find myself worshiping the sunshine. While I adore sunlight all year long, it’s in the middle of winter that I find myself, like so many Americans, pining for more of those warming rays. And while many of us travel to distant lands to soak up the sun, this year consider spending some of that vacation money on a new indoor skylight to brighten your home all year long. A well placed skylight can add natural light to the darkest of spaces and might even help give you the skip in your step you need to defeat this winter’s blues.

Adding a skylight to your home might be an easy decision to make because of all of the benefits to you and your home, but the actual business of installing skylights is better left to the professionals. Not unlike the undertaking of installing a new dormer, a skylight needs every consideration made when making a structural change to the exterior of your home. It’s worth mentioning that while a well placed skylight can offer all the benefits of dormer and is about half the cost. Still, every consideration must be made to make sure you are satisfied with your skylight for years to come.

The average big box store shopper might assume because he or she has installed a window, they would be able to install a skylight as well. It is a common mistake to think of windows and skylights as synonymous. The skylight is a much different beast than the window. The slope of your roof, the direction and angle the sun hits your home, avoiding damage to the roof and being sure to avoid the risk of leakage, are all considerations that must be made when installing a skylight.

If you are considering the addition of a skylight to add to your homes natural beauty and let more of the outside in, remember the good people at Glass Express in Indianapolis. The guiding hand of a window professional will offer the attention to detail required by a skylight project.

Long Term Window Performance

Long term window performance is a key consideration for anyone deciding to invest in new windows.  Here are a few considerations to make when going through the purchasing process.

The quality of the materials your window has been built with has a good deal to do with your windows longevity.  When choosing windows, we understand several factors go into the choice of window material.  Price, style preference, and maintenance requirements might all affect the final decision of window material. To more or lesser degrees; vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood can all be a high quality material for new windows.  Just assure yourself you will face the decision head on perfectly aware that the best materials last the longest.

Outside of wear and tear performance, the second consideration is energy efficiency. You’re not only a fiscally savvy consumer, you also want to save the planet.  So, going with windows that have a high energy star rating do both.  You have the greatest return on your investment in energy bill savings in your pocket and you save natural resources for our planet.  Bam, you’re awesome.

Third, while customers always consider aesthetics such as color and style matching for the their homes’ windows, they don’t always consider a design change in size.  Look for small (or large) changes in design that will pay you dividends in value for years to come.  Always wanted to change that living room window into a bay window or have a picture window that you wished was just a little smaller? Natural light and curb appeal are worth a lot!  We’re just saying, if you’re changing out the window anyway. . .consider design!

Lastly, no matter the material, energy performance, or great design, finding a manufacturer that has attention to detail during installation will also have a great effect on the longevity of your window. In today’s window market, finding professionals that are precise, efficient, and with skills that are trustworthy can be challenging.  Doing your homework and asking friends and neighbors for references will be a huge help in this area. Pick a high quality installation team like the one at Glass Express to make sure the windows you choose will be the windows you love for years to come!
